The preparation of the graft tissues is an essential preliminary step to the graft, to produce Tahitian pearls.
We have to cut small pieces of the mantle of the oyster. The mantle is the lip of the oyster, it is the organ secreting mother of pearl.
These small pieces, the graft tissues will then be introduced into the gonad of the oyster grafted ,in contact with the nucleus. If all goes well, the cells of the mantle will not die, they will multiply and diversify to form a mantle around the nucleus called the pearl bag.
The cells of the pearl bag will then secrete mother-of-pearl layer by layer around the nucleus and make a pearl.
The choice of graft donor oysters is essential, there is a lot of chance that the colors of the donor oyster determines the color of the pearls. Therefor, to obtain beautiful pearls, we have to spend time choosing the most beautiful oysters. In order to do that, we open them slightly and look for the nicest colors with a small dentist mirror.
Then, we remove the gills and cut the mantle, we cut it into strips and finally in small pieces of a few millimeters.
